Beer - I finally get it

Before we left for Denmark, Doug received an email from Finn, the organiser extraordinaire behind what has so far been an amazing trip to Denmark.

Finn asked Doug if Australians like beer - to which I am sure Doug had many typically Aussie responses: "Is the Pope Catholic" "Is the sky blue" and perhaps some not quite appropriate for this blog. The simple answer, however, was a huge YES.

Except that not all Aussies like beer. Surprising as it may seem, there are some who do not dream of cracking open a coldie on a hot summer afternoon. I am - or was - one of those people.

Denmark has changed me. I came in a non-beer drinker and I will leave a beer drinker. And our visit to Fur Bryghus (the brewery on the island of Fur) helped bring about this change.

We had a great tour by Lars, who explained the history of the brewery, and how beer is actually made, and we got the chance to have a taste of many of the different kinds they produce. Now, I am not saying I am going to go and drink my way through a carton of ale any time soon, but there were definitely ones I liked, and definitely ones I will try again.

So while my waistline will probably not be happy with my newly acquired taste for beer, I am happy to finally have been converted.

Here's cheers for beers!

On a side note, if you get the chance to check out Fur Brewery online, make sure you do. It's got some really interesting stories, including how they made an entirely new range of cheaper beer in response to the global financial crisis, and the background to the creation of their logo, which is the topographic symbol for a volcano.
